Celebrating AAPI Heritage
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, celebrating the accomplishments, contributions, and histories of Asian/Pacific Americans. May was chosen specifically to commemorate two events—the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to America on May 7, 1843, as well as the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, since Chinese immigrants played a key role in bringing that crucial project to the finish line.

Good & Bad News Bears
Bears have roared into a few headlines lately, from extinct grizzlies in California to an AI-based warning system in bear-beleaguered Japan.
Grizzlies in the North Cascades
A plan to re-introduce grizzly bears to Washington state was recently approved by the federal government. Wildlife authorities plan to capture 25 bears from Montana and British Columbia, Canada, and airlift them into Washington’s North Cascades mountains to help start a “founder” population and reignite a species that once proliferated there.
Reconsidering the California grizzly
New studies of the California grizzly are challenging accepted notions about the extinct bear, which adorns the state flag but hasn’t been seen there in 100 years. The species has long been considered massive and bloodthirsty, but these beliefs were based more on exaggerated legends than scientific data. New analysis shows that the California grizzly wasn’t any larger than any other species, and that it once lived on a diet of only 10 percent land-animal meat. What’s more, Native American accounts paint a much different picture of the bear as more of a cohabitant than a predator.
Bear witness
Bear attacks in Japan have been on the rise, with more than 200 injuries, and six deaths, reported in 2023, the highest number on record. In response, Japan’s federal government is piloting a bear-detection and warning system that combines camera networks with artificial intelligence to predict where bears will strike next—and warn area authorities in advance.
