Amnesty International is a London-based non-governmental organisation focused on uncovering the facts about violations and breaches of human rights. Amnesty was founded in London in 1961, following the publication of the article ‘The Forgotten Prisoners’ in The Observer on 28 May 1961, by the lawyer Peter Benenson. Benenson got the idea for the organisation’s logo – the lit candle surrounded by barbed wire – from a Chinese proverb: “It is better to light a light than to curse the darkness.”
